Is Anything Too Hard For God?
Updated: Sep 13, 2020
Abraham had sincerely heard the voice of God, and sincerely witnessed God’s moving in his own life; yet, when God promised something bigger, something new, Abraham couldn’t believe it...

Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed and said to himself, “Shall a child be born to a man who is a hundred years old? Shall Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear a child?” – Genesis 17:17
How can we laugh at anything we know God has promised to do? It seems absurd that Abraham would fall on his face and laugh at God’s word as if God could not or would not accomplish what He had promised. Consider the fact that God had appeared to Abraham. How could Abraham question God after God had appeared to Abraham? Consider the fact that Abraham had sincerely experienced God’s favor and leading in his own life. How could Abraham question God after he had experienced God’s favor and leading? Abraham had sincerely heard the voice of God, and sincerely witnessed God’s moving in his own life; yet, when God promised something bigger, something new, Abraham couldn’t believe it. He thought the idea of God doing such a thing was so ridiculous that he laughed at the idea as if it were impossible. Then, Sarah does the same thing (18:12).
It’s certainly seems absurd when we think about how these two could question God at this point in their journey. Yet, we have all been guilty. All of us at times have questioned God’s promises. We question God’s word. We wonder, “How God could possibly ___________?”
God gives the pointed answer to our doubts in 18:14 when He simply declares “Is there anything too hard for the LORD?”. No. That’s the answer to that question. No. There is nothing too hard for God. There is nothing that God cannot do; and The LORD proved it. A year later, Isaac was born. God always keeps His word.
Today, is there something in your life that you have given up on believing God can do? Is there something that you laugh at when you think of the possibility of God changing that something in your life? May we learn the lesson from Abraham and Sarah that God can do anything. May our faith be rekindled. May our expectation grow that we will see God’s promises fulfilled in our own lives. No matter what the need may be that you are facing today, there is nothing too hard for God.
