No other foundation

"And I would be horrified to be part of a church that was not being built by Jesus Christ, but rather by the minds and hands of men. If you’re part of such a place you need to..."

For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. (1st Corinthians 3:11)

What does it mean that there is “no…foundation other than…Jesus Christ”? Have you ever pondered that statement?

Any personal faith, any ministry, any life, or any church built upon anything other than Jesus is not truly of God’s Kingdom. Alas, how many lives and ministries are bound to fail because they were never built upon the only foundation God recognizes in His Kingdom. How many missionary organizations are built upon humanitarian aid? How many people begin their supposed Christian life motivated to obtain benefits of belonging to a social group we call the church? How many churches are planned, built, and operated around the question of “what do people want?” All of these are destined to fail. Maybe not in an earthly sense. Some of the largest “ministries” on the planet operate this way and have massive earthly success. They are just failures in the Kingdom of God, the only kingdom that matters. There is only one foundation to everything that is truly Christian. That foundation is Christ. If the foundation is anything else, it isn’t truly Christian.

Your personal faith must be built upon Jesus Christ. It starts there. And after a life-long journey of learning, searching, and growing up spiritually into the man or woman of God you have been called to be, you’ll find that your faith ends right where it started: in Jesus Christ. He is the alpha and the omega. The beginning and the end. The author and finisher. It is all Jesus and nothing else. Have you allowed your faith to become something that rests and is built upon anything other than Jesus Christ? Come on. Don’t just shrug that question off. If you are quick to say not guilty, what evidence do you have to prove it? What can you point to that demonstrates your faith is entirely founded on Jesus Christ? Is Jesus Christ truly the beginning, the center, and the end of your life?

Your mission work must be built upon Jesus Christ. It starts there. It is not about serving and giving, and feeding, and clothing or any other form of humanitarian aid. All of those things are wonderful things that we should be doing, but they are not the goal. The goal is Jesus Christ. Your mission work must start with Jesus. He is the foundation. He is the goal. He is what people need more than food or water or clothing or medical help or anything else you want to give them. Humanitarian aid should flow from a true desire to bring the love of Christ to hurting people. But the ultimate goal is always bringing people Christ. If we bring them food but leave their soul starving and bound for hell what good have we done? All true missionary work is about Jesus Christ. He is the foundation. He is the message. He is the goal. Anything else is not the mission of Christ, it’s just work.

Your church must be built upon Jesus Christ. It starts there. It is not about people in chairs. It is not about popularity or social media following. It is not about viewers. If this were the case, the Olympics would be the most spiritual event the world has ever seen. The church is meant to be a place of life-transformation. A place where sinners come to know Jesus and saints grow to know Him more. The church is built upon Jesus Christ. In fact, Jesus is the One who builds the true Church, His church. (Matthew 16:18). And I would be horrified to be part of a church that was not being built by Jesus Christ, but rather by the minds and hands of men. If you’re part of such a place you need to leave immediately and find a church that is led by real God-ordained pastors who understand that nothing matters but bringing people to know Jesus Christ.

“For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” The foundation, the beginning, the start of it all is Jesus Christ. If it started out any way other than that, then it hasn’t really started at all.
