The Discipline of Rest

"God rested. Let that sink in deep into your heart. God rested. In this ridiculous pace of life that many of us have been trapped into living, we must recapture the practice of rest.... "

So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation. (Genesis 2:3)

Of all the days of creation, there was only one day that God called holy. The final day, which was really no day of creation at all; it was a day of rest. God said that day, the day of doing nothing but resting was a day to be set apart from the rest as holy. What have we done with that day? The day of rest. What have we done with rest at all?

God rested. Let that sink in deep into your heart. God rested. In this ridiculous pace of life that many of us have been trapped into living, we must recapture the practice of rest. The Almighty Creator of heaven and earth – rested. What will become of us when we refuse to follow His lead? We will become exhausted mentally, physically, and spiritually. With nothing left in the tank, we begin going through the motions of life; we begin neglecting important relationships and living out our commitments with half-hearted devotion because it’s all we have left to give. There is only one way to recharge these bodies and minds of ours; and it is not learning to be more productive. There is one way – rest. You must see it as an absolute necessity in your life. It is not an option to consider. It is a must. God created you in His likeness. Then God rested. What are you doing to find your rest this week?
