Whatever He says

This command from Mary explains in the simplest form, in seven brief words, the secret to seeing God’s power and work in our lives, or stifling God’s power and work out of our lives.

His mother said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it.” – John 2.5

This is the command given that brought about the first miracle ever recorded by the Lord Jesus. His mother, not knowing how, when, or what Jesus would do, simply said “whatever He says to you – do it.” This is a most profound statement. It explains in the simplest form, in seven brief words, the secret to seeing God’s power and work in our lives, or stifling God’s power and work out of our lives. There are four things important about this passage we must not overlook.

First, the word – whatever. Regardless of whether or not we can understand it, we must obey whatever God tells us to do. There are no excuses. Following half way will not cut it. We must be entirely willing to trust and obey no matter what it is that His Word tells us to do.

Second, the words – He says. If God has not said it then it will surely come to nothing. There is no authority without the Word of God. His Word is the only creative, miracle producing, life-changing word that exists. All else will fail. This is why it is so important that we know exactly what God has said. Because what God has said is still what God says today for His Word endures forever. It was true when it was spoken. It is true now. It will be true tomorrow, and every day ever after. We must now what He says.

Third, the words – to you. Yes, God still speaks – to you. And what He says to you must matter above all else. It matters not if the rest of the world disagrees. It matters not if the rest of your peers think you to be misinformed. You must learn to allow your heart and your ears to be tuned to God. You can’t live your entire life based upon what God told someone else. What has God told you to do… about your marriage? What has God told you to do… about your ministry? What has God told you to do… about your anger? What has God told you to do… about your role in building His Kingdom? What has God told you to do… about the way you treat people? What exactly has God told you? Whatever it is – you must do it. Your level of willingness to listen and obey the commands that God has directly spoken to you will determine the level of blessing and favor that you find from God. God will not bless disobedience.

Fourth, the words – do it. God, almost always, requires that we do something in obedience to His Word before He blesses us with the promise. Most of the time the Lord only gives us a glimpse of what is to come, requiring us not only to trust Him with the directions, but to trust Him with the outcome as well. There was no guarantee of exactly what would happen if these servants did as they were told. The same is true of Abraham, Joseph, Moses, Joshua, David, and the rest of God’s great cast of men and women He has used throughout the ages. We are to trust and obey; not know it all from the beginning to the end and obey. Those who have taken hold of the promises God and experienced the divine working of God in their lives are always those who did something about what they were told to do. Just as God does not bless disobedience, nor does God bless laziness. We must know what God has said and then – do it.

What a simple, yet profound, insight we receive here from the words of Jesus’ mother. “Whatever He says to you, do it.” To know this; to believe this; to obey this; is to walk in the land of God’s divine working and favor.
